Manipulation of data is much more common than overall believed. Besides pure fraud, manipulation takes many forms, such as adding to abstracts or titles words not supported by the data in order to increase the probability to be picked up during searches. A second problem are the journals (many online) with poor reviewing and withotu the possiblity to send letters to the editor.

I am an advocate of reproducible research and a big fan of reproducibleresearch.net initiative. I went over the paper on forensic bioinformatics briefly and found some of the data-sources hyper links are broken. It will be worth it coming up with a topic in this blog that talks about "Staying connected with all the raw materials to enable a better reproducible research".

I haven't seen any of the reproducible research people discussing the foolishness of the East Anglia CRU -- clearly, if they had been using any basic concepts of literate programming they wouldn't be up the creek.

Such "famous" figures using such archaic methods, with much in the balance.

Just something to think about: when big-picture science and international politics collide, shouldn't the core science be based around a methodological philosophy of reproducible research?

Wouldn't it have been great if they could have had several Sweave files ready to go?

Hi Patrick,
thanks for your enthusiasm about SHARE.

I would like to point you to a band new initiative: http://planet-research20.org/ser2009/index.php?option=com_community&view=profile&Itemid=93 That community site should be filled with nice content pretty soon.

Apart from that, do you mind making people aware of SHARE on http://reproducibleresearch.net/index.php/How_to ? I think especially for those who are currently reluctant to make their research reproducible due to licensing and ownership issues can be convinced "to SHARE" while they cannot so easily be convinced to upload code and data to a public/uncontrolled download site such as http://rr.epfl.ch/ I don't want to go too much off-topic in this post; instead, I propose to extend your HOWTO and link to the SHARE article as soon as it is published.

Research will always be a high dollar category. The domains you have mentioned are short and specific. If developed correctly they could be a valuable addition to the internet and the field of science.

Good article. But often in an effort to reproduce the work we end up with a new work.
